It’s an adjustment, certainly, it feels a bit weird to me, as well.
But I think their idea is that new readers and viewers collapse into giggles over his old nickname sometimes.
DC’s worried that the name “Dick” will turn…
Yes, yes I can completely understand how the nickname ‘Dick’ is way too overt a reference to sex. Transparent bikinis on the other hand, tend to remind me more of the teletubies.
DC, if your target audience isn’t mature enough to handle the word dick then they’re probably not mature enough for the majority of your new titles that include sex- or to put it in more age appropriate terms, ‘the nasty’- which by the way, rules out the Nightwing series itself.
To be honest, I was thinking more about the cartoons. I don’t think it’s such a big deal in print. I don’t think it’s a huge deal either way, really.
Well for the Young Justice animated series, Robin’s name is Dick Grayson. They put it up on the Cartoon Network site. They apparently think the target audience for that show is mature enough to handle the name.
I haven’t seen Young Justice. But putting it up on the site isn’t the same as using it in the dialogue every few minutes, and having an actor say it out loud, which is what I’m talking about.
And again, I’m just guessing. And I’m not convinced it’s necessary.
It’s also an outdated nickname. No one shortens “Richard” to “Dick” anymore, which probably makes the unfortunate associations more noticeable. It’s usually Rich now. Little kids watching Young Justice aren’t going to care or notice, but the teenagers that the comics are being aimed at will.
